Know The Special Benefits Of Phones Like Nokia N96

By Michael Rolfe

The Nokia N96 is an evolution of the all-conquering Nokia N95, retaining its kitchen-sink approach to features while improving build quality and style. It's a tough act to follow however, and the N96 has got to be pretty special to lure dedicated N95'ers away from their beloved handset. So has Nokia succeeded? Of course they have! Luckily for us, the N96 is just as much a range-topping flagship as its predecessor. As the N96 is a slider phone, the 2.8" screen dominates the front panel. With a resolution of 240x320 and capable of displaying 16 million colors, it looks superb in the majority of situations. The N96 runs the Symbian S60 9.3 operating system with the excellent Feature Pack 2 installed, bringing with it very welcome upgrades to performance and stability, plus a wealth of visual tweaks and the very handy Active Standby screen.

The talk time is up to 190 minutes for WCDMA; 260 minutes for GSM; stand by time is up to 320 hours for WCDMA; 320 hours for GSM and the video captures are for 215 minutes. The video call can last up to 280 minutes; and the music play back is for 24 hours in an offline mode; and the web browsing is allowed up to 3 hours and one can hear the FM radio for up to 14 hours. The operation times may vary completely depending on the radio access technology used and it has a TFT color display which can display up to 16 million colors with a wide 160 degree viewing angle. To optimize the display brightness and power consumption, the ambient light detector can be used. The operating system is specified as Symbian OS; and the user interface is S60 3rd Edition, with a feature pack of 2 and with C++ and Java SDKs.

N96 is in fact the first Nokia handset that ships with a car charger and it's a neat accessory we appreciate. The pre bundled hands free is a two-piece combo, which means you can easily swap the provided headset without sacrificing the remote control. Nokia N96 stands at 103 x 55 x 18 mm, totaling a volume of 92 cc. This is slightly longer and a tad slimmer than Nokia N95 8GB. Samsung i8510 INNOV8 has similar size but is the heaviest of the three. It takes quite a big pocket to stash Nokia N96 and the weight of 125g won't let you forget it's there.

The Nokia N96 mobile phone fully loaded for data connection including GPRS Class 32 with up to 107 kbps speed connection, HSCDS (High speed Cable Data Service connection), EDGE Class 32 with up to 296kbps speed connection, 3G network connection with up to 3.6 Mbps data speed, WiFi 802.11 b/g wireless LAN connection with UPnP technology and wireless Bluetooth v2.0 connection with A2DP. Accessing internet videos is quick and simple. The Nokia N96 supports common video formats including MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video, making favorite videos easy to view.

The EDGE network connection functionality offered by Nokia N96 mobile phone handset allows ultra fast data transmissions of up to 296 kbps speed, and faster downloads and file transfers, while Bluetooth technology enables communication with other Bluetooth compatible devices and gadgets such as color printers, PDAs and laptops for instant sync-ups, data transfer and print jobs in a flash. Available in Gloss Black colors, the Nokia N96 mobile phone is also equipped with standard fast USB v2.0 port (miniUSB port) which is used for both power recharging and PC connectivity for data exchange. The Nokia N96 smart phone also sports an integrated Digital Video Broadcast Handheld (DVB-H) receiver supporting Live Broadcast Mobile TV with impressive audio quality and the ability to record live TV.N96 packs a large 2.8-inch display, which takes up almost the whole front panel. Above it are the earpiece and video-call camera, there's no ambient light sensor this time.

The tightly-squeezed controls on the front panel are an ergonomic challenge and the fact that it's all a flimsy flat membrane doesn't make it any easier. On top of that, the plastic used looks appallingly cheap. As far as the layout of controls is concerned, Nokia N96 kind of reminds of its predecessor - the N95 8GB. The front panel keeps the well known arrangement of a huge screen cramming a narrow navigation deck all the way down. But this time there are as many as 11 keys crowding the D-pad. The Nokia N96 naturally supports the Ovi family of Nokia internet services, including maps, music, media sharing and more.
