Microsoft Zune 16GB - A True Media Player with Functionality

By Matt Ryan

Microsoft introduced a new media player within the last decade; however, has continually tried to improve upon their original model. This brings them to current day with the release of their third generation Zune (16GB). With a lower price take, that its predecessors, and many more features, the Zune (16GB) can finally compete with other high end MP3 players on the market.

The latest Zune (16GB) release sells for $199, quite a bit lower than previous models. It has Wi-Fi integration along with an updated FM tuner. The FM tuner worked nicely in the predecessors of the third generation Zune (16GB), but is even more impressive now.

The FM tuner is robust with the integration of Radio Broadcast Data System technology. This technology enables user to see the song and artist name, of the current song, when the radio station uses the same technology. Additionally, users can tag their favorite songs, when they hear them, and they will automatically move to a virtual cart within Zune Marketplace. Furthermore, consumers can have up to 50 preset FM radio stations available at the click of a finger.

Not only do users get to enjoy music, videos, and movies, from the third generation Zune, but they also have the luxury of playing games. There are - currently - two games installed on the Zune (16GB) upon shipment: Hexic and Texas Hold 'em. These may not be the most entertaining games in the world, but more will be available on Zune Marketplace for purchase and download. The third generation Zunes are now customizable; simply plug your Zune into your XBOX 360, and you can change the soundtrack music to the existing games on the Zune (16GB).

With measurements of 3.6" x 1.6" x 0.33" and weighing in at 1.7oz, Microsoft's Zune is now physically comparable to some iPod models. Other than the size, the external features have not changed much from its predecessors. One of the bonuses of this is that all of your old accessories, from previous Zune models, will still work on this Zune. A minor change would be the shiny coating Microsoft covered the Zune with. This coating; however, attracts scratches and smudges easily making it difficult to keep clean.

Users will thoroughly enjoy the viewing experience of pictures and videos with the 1.8" LCD display (320x240-pixel resolution). Turning the Zune (16GB) upright and then on its side will change the way in which you are viewing your files on the screen. On its side, you are able to view images as widescreen, and upright the view is standard.

Consumers are able to purchase and download music, podcasts, and videos directly from Zune Marketplace - anytime and anyplace. (Users have the option of a monthly subscription - $15 a month - or pay as you go.) Additionally, users can share their own videos and pictures with other Zune owners. One more added bonus is Zune Social; a social networking platform that allows Zune owners to communicate and share information - similar to MySpace.

There are multitudes of file formats supported by the third generation Zunes. MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, AAC, WMV, and MPEG-4 are just a few. An added bonus, AAC, means that audio books are now supported on the Zune (16GB).

Microsoft's third generation Zune (16GB) not only offers multiple media outlets, for users, but also offers instant connectivity to other users and files. Enjoy your favorite media like never before with the newest Zune (16GB).
