No, You're Not Too Old to Learn Piano

By Georgia Reader

Did you ever want to be a pianist but thought you just didn't have the talent? Some people decide as they are older to try things that they have been afraid of. Probably top on the list is the wish to be a fine pianist or musician that people look up to.

New technology and growing popularity has made piano lessons for adults more common every year. Considering piano lessons can be a frightening or intimidating thought but there are many resources to make it an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. While we have all heard that the best time to learn music is about age 8, adults actually have many advantages over child students.

Adult students are frequently enthusiastic and willing to practice and most instructors enjoy working with willing students. Some older students have taken lessons years ago and want to start over again, or they are inspired new beginners. Teachers also like to work with older students as they are involved and fascinated in many styles of music ranging from jazz to classical.

What kind of music do the instructors teach and how long and how much are the lessons? Interview the teacher and ask them about their teaching philosophy and their teaching materials. Ask them what they expect from you and how long and how often you should practice.

Try to look at each accomplishment for every assignment you have completed at the end of every week. Keep in mind that fortitude combined with a positive attitude are good qualities for you to have as you progress and grow as a piano player. Keep optimistic about your piano lessons and if you have nonsupoortive or insensitive family members, keep silent about your piano lessons for the time being.

If you however, still do not feel comfortable going to formal lessons research your options on line. There are many DVD, VHS or on line methods of instruction. While these are no real comparison to one on one in person instruction it is a great fit for some people who want to learn at their own pace in their own way.

What if you don't own a keyboard or piano? Find out what is available according to your budget, such as the expensive grand pianos, uprights, spinets (the smallest pianos for small rooms), electric keyboards with 88, 77, or 61 keys which are for compact spaces. It doesn't matter how old you are when you begin to play, what does matter is your budget and the space you can allow in your home for the instrument.

You can have the choice of working with a piano instructor with weekly lessons or purchase an online piano course where you can work on the tutorials on your own or with a friend. Developing talents and expressing our selves through music are good for self-esteem, mental health, and relieving stress---as there are many positive benefits. You will feel better about yourself and realize that with some work and dedication, you can achieve your goal to learn piano.
