Batch Processing with Adobe Photoshop

If you weren't already aware, Photoshop has these great features called Actions. Actions can be used for many things, including doing the mundane tasks you don't feel like doing, creating amazing effects, and maximizing productivity.

I recently had the pleasure of a little thing called Batch Processing. I'm a dedicated designer, but there was no way I was going sit in front of my computer for hours changing the Hue/Saturation for every single image for my forum. What is Batch Processing, you say? Well, it's something that processes a batch,and I'm going to show you how to do it.

When creating an action, you need it to produce the same one result. Let's imagine an example of changing the Hue/Saturation in 100+ photos from bright red to a rose tone. You might need an action to serve another purpose, but let's stick to this Hue/Saturation idea for this tutorial. Now pick a small image such as an icon and we'll continue.

Now go to Window - Actions and make sure it that it is checked. If it is, you should see a tab in the Layers Palette labeled Actions.

Click on the arrow button to open the Actions menu and go to "new Set." This will create a folder for your action (you don't really need the folder, it just helps with organization.)

Now go back to the Actions menu and choose "New Action." Have an idea of the steps you'll need to take and their order before recording an action. Since this is a fairly simple action, you will master this in no time at all.

Now for the recording part. There will be a small circle icon between the square and the triangle at the bottom of the palette that you will need to click. Now Photoshop will record everything you do until the end of the Action. If you have an error, simply stop the Action by pushing the square icon and go back to your last step taken.

For my action, the first thing I need to do is change the Mode of the image to RGB, since .gif files are saved in Index mode which don't take too kindly to colorization. So with the action recording, go to Image - Mode - RGB. Now take a look at your Actions palette, it should look like this:

Next, we need to remove the image of it's current color to make adding our own color easier to apply, so go to Image - Adjustment - Desaturate.

You should see a naked grey image and so we need to add some color. Make sure your action is still recording and go to Image - Adjustments - Hue/Saturation. It helps to have the settings for color saved in a .ahu (Hue/Saturation) file so all you have to do is click Load and select Teal.ahu. If you don't have a file saved you can simply use the sliders.

Woo, we've now SunBlinded the icon! All that's left to do now is save it for the web. Is your action still recording? Good. Go to File - Save For The Web and set your file type and optimization settings. I use the standard GIF settings, but whatever floats your boat, dude. Select your destination directory and save. If your Actions palette looks like this:

Now you can press the square button on the actions tab and stop recording. To put your newly created action into action, we'll need to do a Batch Process. A batch process will take all the images in a specified directory and apply whatever changes were recorded in the action.

Go to File - Automate - Batch and make sure the name of the Action Set you just created is in the first dropdown list and the name of the Action is in the second. Set the third dropdown box (next to Source) to Folder and use the Choose button to find your duplicated or created folder of images. For destination, you can either leave it set to it's default "None" to have the action applied and saved in the source folder, or save the "actionized" images into a separate folder. Once you have everything configured to your liking, click OK.

Now you can sit back and watch your images color themselves because you're using Actions and Batch Processing to do your tedious work.

When this low budget film, with a cast of unknown actors and actresses, came out in 1987, it took a whole lot of critics and moviegoers by surprise and by storm. The amazing part is that it manages to surprise and delight audiences to this day. This film has brought in more than three hundred million dollars from all over the world, and set a record in home video sales as the first to sell more than a million copies. The soundtrack produced two multi-platinum albums and a huge number of singles.

The secret seems to be a combination of qualities. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey are a scintillating couple when they get going, and they certainly do! The scene is set in 1963, when the world (at least the United States) still held on to something like innocence. Jennifer Grey is well cast as Frances Houseman, a not-quite-typical Jewish Princess who is known as "Baby" and doesn't see a thing wrong with it. Patrick Swayze dazzles with his portrayal of the sexy but determinedly sullen Johnny Castle.

The Housemans are V.I.P. guests at Kellerman's Resort in the Catskills, on a three-week family vacation. Dr. Houseman, the personal physician of the resort's owner, his wife (not quite as staid as she first appears), 17 year old Baby and Lisa, her older and trying- to-be-superior sister all have some living and learning to do. Baby sets the stage by accidentally getting involved with the "No Guests Please" resort staff.

Baby's naivet? is matched not only by her growing attraction to Johnny, but also by her desire to "change the world". When Penny has an illegal abortion, Baby gets her father to save the dancer's life. Dr. Houseman is horrified that his "Baby" is mixed up in this. To make it worse, he assumes that Johnny is responsible, and forbids her to have anything further to do with him.

However, the 17-year-old girl has fallen in love as she is learning how to do the intricate and flamboyantly sensual "dirty dancing" that Johnny is so good at teaching. Johnny, in turn, is discovering that among all the women who pursue him, he has never met one like Baby. As they develop mutual trust, they also learn to dance together. And oh, how they dance! With the Foxtrot and Potato Sack Races in the background, these two reach the heights!

Meanwhile, the Foxtrot and badminton go on, but other dramas are playing out. Lisa confides to Baby that she's planning to "go all the way" with Robbie. Baby knows that Robbie is the father of Penny's aborted child, but their father thinks Johnny is the culprit. When Johnny is accused of theft by one of his many female "conquests" - she's seen him with Baby - he is assumed guilty by almost everyone. Baby knows, and this time Frances tells the truth. Frances, as Johnny tells her, is "a grown-up name".

Dirty Dancing, with all the sensual and provocative dance scenes between Baby/Frances and Johnny, is really about innocence and growing up. Father and daughter gain a new understanding, and Baby begins the process of becoming the woman she was meant to be. The rousing finale, when Johnny makes a decision and pulls Baby out of her corner and into the spotlight, is downright thrilling to watch. In front of Housemans, Kellermans and everyone else, the two of them bring Dirty Dancing to its finest hour!

Dirty Dancing is basically a simple, romantic love story, with just enough supporting characters and interwoven plot lines to keep it interesting. When the forces of stodginess and intolerance show up, they are ultimately and emphatically overwhelmed by the forces of love and fair play. The realistically choreographed dance scenes are a powerful force in themselves, but everything comes together for a rousing happy ending.

If you missed this performance in the movie theatres, there may still be a chance to see the Broadway production, which translates very well. It has played to great applause in Germany, England, Canada and Australia, and as of this date is still playing in London. The touring production will be in Boston until March 15th, 2009. Go see it if you can, and if you can't, get the video. This wonderfully Dirty Dancing is too much fun to miss!

Mortal Skulls Motorcycle Club Winter Bar-B-Q

When the Mortal Skulls MC first came up with the idea to do a Winter Bar-B-Q, The only real Question was where to have it? After thinking what area on Long Island NY says Summer time fun more then any other everyone agreed it had to be on the east end of the Island.

With many of the Bars out east closed down for the Winter finding a place was not easy. After speaking with Bob the owner of CB's Bar and Grill (cbsbarandgrill.net)214 West Montauk Hwy in Hampton Bays the Mortal Skulls MC knew they had found a good spot for the 2008 Winter Bar-B-Q!

The Bar-B-Q was held on Sunday January 13Th from Noon till 6pm and over 130 Bikers came out for a Winter day of Summer time fun! The event had everything a Summer time Biker Bar-B-Q should have Plenty of Sun Shine, Burgers and Hot Dogs, great Music,Raffles,Hot Bikini Girls provided by Marie at LIExotics.com and of course lots of Bikers!

With the great weather many chose to Ride out and the parking lot was full of Motorcycles. The Mortal Skulls MC thanked the owners and Staff at CB's Bar and Grill for all their help and Hospitality, The Bikini Girls from LI Exotics, The Numerous Motorcycle Clubs, Friends and Supporters who came out to help make this one of their best events ever! The Winter Bar-B-Q has been added to the list of great Annual Mortal Skulls MC event!!!

Even though the Winter Bar-B-Q went perfect with No problems at all and many local Hampton Bays Residents and Businesses wanted the event back again in 2009, The Hamptons Town Board does not want Biker events in their area. At the end of October Bob the owner of CB's caved into the pressure by the Hamptons Town Board and Police force ( even after stating he never would many times) and decided he could not allow CB's to be the Location of the Bar-B-Q this year. After much last Minute running around a new place was found and the Winter Bar-B-Q 2009 will be held at "The Loose Caboose" in Riverhead. Having an outdoor marriage is a great way to celebrate that important moment in your life in a different way, whether you are ecologically aware, or a nature enthusiast, a lover of beaches, or even if you just want to say your vows under a clear sky, an outdoor wedding will be something to remember.

Notwithstanding, there are lots of pitfalls that you need to take into account if you want to get married outdoors. Many things can happen differently to your plan, so toy need to be as prepared as possible.

1) Your guest's comfort should be one of your foremost thoughts. Consider the weather, for instance. If your wedding is going to be in the winter, make sure that extra blankets are available if anyone is cold. In the summer, make sure that there is plenty of shade, and in all seasons, put up a windbreaker if the area is windy. And make sure that everyone is adequately seated, and especially so elderly people.

2) Have plenty of drinks available close to where everyone will be congregating to avoid discomfort and dehydration. And of course, fruity drinks for the young ones and some bottles of champagne or sparkling wine for the adults are always welcome.

3) Getting wed outside means that thanks to the natural beauty of the surroundings, you will probably not have to decorate much, but some added pizzazz is always welcome. Extra flower bouquets are a good idea, and something to act a sda backdrop to the ceremony also helps to draw focus.

4) Dedicate special attention to the nose and sound situation. All the guests want to hear the ceremony unfolding, so heavy surf or some other background noise are unwelcome. Use a microphone and loudspeakers if necessary.

5) Do something against insects, if there is little wind in the area. Especially so at sunset. Repelling candles are great, and giving guests lotions to drive away the critters is also a possibility.

6) Check that you have all the permits necessary to hold the wedding in the chosen outdoor location, and make sure that you are not breaking any rules with matters such as waste disposal, vehicle parking or photography.

7) Have an alternative. The weather may turn sour, so you need to be able to hold the ceremony indoors if necessary. If you are in a somewhat built-up area you should have a hall available nearby, while if you are celebrating in a faraway place it makes a lot of sense to erect a big party tent, for all occurrences.

I have just finished watching the second episode of the new FX show "Son's of Anarchy". I have been a fan of the FX Show "The Shield" for years and I have to say, I have enjoyed "Sons of Anarchy" so far. The show has cool bikes and lots of action!

As a Member of an Outlaw Motorcycle Club, I can see many mistakes already in the show. One thing that really surprised me is how people have reacted to the show and me personally. People who know I'm a member of a Motorcycle Club are asking me, "Are you guys really like that???" Most of these people have known me for years! This is just after a two episodes of "Sons of Anarchy" their wondering if I'm leading some kind of double life.

Can you imagine if a show about criminal killer Florists came out? Would people ask them if they where really like that? One fact of life about being a Biker I have come to except is, it's real easy for people to think of Bikers as the bad guys. It's always been that way. I wonder how many Cops had people ask them the same question when the Shield came out? I also wonder how many Cops who watch the Shield and know that show is fiction will watch "Sons of Anarchy" and think that's how Motorcycle Clubs really are! The show "Sons of Anarchy" is fiction and it is way over the top.

Son's of Anarchy is going to shine a bright light into the Motorcycle Club world. Where as the last ten years have been all about Custom Motorcycle Builders and has led to a lot of people getting into Motorcycle Riding, I believe the next ten years will be all about Motorcycle Clubs. Now this show could be a great thing for Motorcycle Clubs if, in-between all the fictional action, it also focuses on the bond of Brotherhood Motorcycle Clubs are really based on.

Although the opportunity for "Sons of Anarchy" to make a positive statement about Motorcycle Clubs by highlighting the good Motorcycle Clubs do and the positive impact that they have on their communities exists, I have a feeling the show will have a negative impact on Clubs, Independent Bikers, and the Motorcycle Community in overall.

All Motorcycle Clubs are going to need to keep their eyes wide open and watch any new prospects. MCs need to make sure that new prospects are there for the Brotherhood and betterment of the Club and the community, not to live out some misguided fantasy they may have seen on TV or in some Movie. Another big concern of mine is people who will just go out and throw on a set of patches and think they are the "Sons of Anarchy". The Motorcycle Club world is all about Respect and there is a serious protocol that is followed by all Clubs. I would not recommend violating that protocol in any way.

Motorcycle Clubs have spent the better part of the past 20 years working hard to shake the old biker gang stereotype of the 60's and 70's. Now that we have come close to accomplishing our goal, shows like "Sons of Anarchy" and the upcoming HBO show 1% are here to drag our image back into the gang world. How far will these shows set us back? 20-30 Years? I would ask the producers of these shows, there sponsors, and everyone else out there to please remember that Brotherhood is what the Motorcycle Club world is truly about.
