What Adult Piano Students Should Know

By Elizabeth Schohl

Many times adults look back and wish that they had followed through on lessons they did not enjoy at the time. Sometimes parents would try to make their children want to learn the piano, so that they could have a talent, or learn the piano on a step towards learning other instruments. Children often feel it is a drudgery to have to practice everyday after school, or go to lessons once a week, or perform in recitals, while their friends are out playing.

Many parents will feel that if a child does not sit down to try their assignments from their teachers, it's best to stop the lessons. Years later, many of these former students often regret that they stopped the lessons as children. They think about starting up with the lessons again, and feel that this time they can be successful because they are motivated.

Learning a new instrument like piano is trial and error, so you will play a few wrong notes but that is to be expected from a beginning student. Keep in mind your goal as a new student is to learn to read and play the notes for the bass and treble clef as well as playing both hands together easily. Some people foolishly believe that they can learn to play expertly a Beethoven Sonata within a month's time, even if they just started out as a new student.

Piano takes basic knowledge, what notes correspond to what part of the musical staff, how to hear when you are hitting a wrong note, and learning the basic fundamentals which are necessary to read music. It is said that once you have learned to play the piano, you can play other instruments, just finding the way to hit corresponding notes on the guitar, violin or cello. So learning the piano is a great way to prepare for learning other international musical instruments.

Attitude is a big part of learning, as you are going to make mistakes and it is not an overnight learning process. It takes practice over and over, until your fingers move with your eye and brain coordination-much like learning to type. As an adult, it is not an immediate gratification experience because getting results will take a lot of practice.

When children or adult students first begin lessons they may want to give up after a couple of weeks if they feel that what they are playing does not sound like real music. Many parents and children have unrealistic expectations about fast results after a couple of lessons. What most do not realize that the student learns one step at a time each week so that they gradually build some skills.

If you want to be independent and study on your own, try an online piano course created by an expert piano instructor. These tutorials are usually in video and audio, where you can learn from the comfort of your home with your computer and your keyboard. Study to get the basic skills mastered, then you can find a piano musical style niche to learn.

Some child piano students are now returning as adult students to advance where they left off. There are sites on the Internet to suit your needs, if you wish to become an adult piano student. Students can work or practice with family members in learning the tutorials together, often making it an enjoyable and educational experience.
