The Cary Grant Story

By Danny Hoover

On January 18th of 1904, Cary Grant was brought into this world in Horfield, Bristol with a birth name of Archibald Alexander Leach. His childhood was to be considered average for that of a middle class family in the UK, but at the age of 9, tragedy stuck his family as his mother become mentally ill and had to be institutionalized. At the age of 14, he would leave school in order to join up with a troupe of comedians led by Bob Pender.

With Bob Pender, Cary was able to develop a number of entertainment talents like pantomime as ell as acrobatics which would become useful later on. All over England the troupe toured and while he was enjoying it, he felt he was destined for something more. His luck quickly changed and along with 6 others from the group (7 boys in total), he was sent off to Broadway to be part of the musical entitled Good Times.

In 1931 he left the Broadway scene and headed off to California to advance his career. Changing his name to Cary Grant, he managed to get a screen test with Paramount and was accepted. A year later he would debut in the movie entitled This is the Night and would immediately become a success.

It was Mae West who had to have Cary in her movies and before the next full year was up, he had been in the films 'She Done Him Wrong' as well as 'I'm No Angel'. It was not until 1935 though that Cary Grant would finally get the big break he was looking for when he was paired up with Katherine Hepburn in the movie 'Sylvia Scarlet't.

Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant made the perfect on-screen duo. It was in 1937 that his contract with Paramount expired and as was customary at the time he chose not to resign with any one studio but rather pick and chose the movies he would star in. It was with Katherine at his side that Cary would create some of the best comedies of his career.

Cary Grant would eventually retire from making films when he turned 62 and instead focus on family. He wanted to be a father and a husband and while he may have been a charmer on the big screen, his 5 marriages proved that off screen, it wasn't so easy. He ended up having only one child, a daughter whom he had with his 3rd wife. In 1986, Cary grant had a serious stoke and passed away leaving behind him a large and very loving fan base that still enjoy watching his movies today.
